Thanks for your comment Bill.

You make an interesting point about people's subconcious desire to save fuel anyway. This could well be true - but in any case, it's a good thing if people use less fuel to do the same mileage, isn't it? Not only will the environment benefit, but they'll save money.

As I comment in the article, it is notoriously hard to prove any claims that chemicals - whether the fuel itself or an additive - save you small amounts of fuel. Shell, however, are very confident in this claim and have carried out a fair amount of independent testing to back it. Time will tell, I guess. One of the challenges for Shell's marketing team is that most 'normal' drivers believe that all fuel is the same and only choose based on price. It will be interesting to see if these new fuels help Shell expand their market share against the supermarkets.

So Shell are the first of the oil companies to respond to greener ,cleaner, more efficient engines by advertising 2 new fuel saving products.
Firstly - well done Shell, at least we get the impression they are trying to help motorists but lets be wary about this.
Shell's claim is they can save you 1 litre of fuel per 50 litres which equates to 2% savings, this is achieved by new ingredients in the fuel and does not involve extra costs at the pumps.
Why should we be wary? The answer lies partly within ourselves, if we are bying money saving fuel we will naturally want to moderate our driving techniques, which themselves can provide at last 10% savings, which then makes it very difficult to prove where any savings have come from.
