Planning a long car journey?
Are you planning a long car journey? Being properly prepared can save you a world of hassle and stress. Here are our top 10 tips for journey planning:

Know your route in advance - use a sat nav
, a route planner or a road atlas
to plan your trip if you are not certain that you know the way.
- Make sure your car is prepared - check the tyres, oil and water and fill up the windscreen wash before you leave.
- Fill up - make sure you have plenty of fuel. It doesn't make any sense to cut it too fine - what if you get stuck in a big traffic jam somewhere and run out?
- Clean out and declutter your car - make it as comfortable and pleasant to be in as possible.
- If you are not familiar with your car, make sure you know where the controls are - especially windscreen wipers, headlights, indicators and horn.
- Make sure your mirrors are correctly adjusted - well-adjusted mirrors will give you good all-round visibility, reducing your chances of having an accident.
- Mobile phone handsfree kit
- if you may need to use your mobile, make sure you have a handsfree kit
fitted and that you know how to use it.
- Consider taking comfortable shoes to drive in - this is especially relevant to ladies with high heels, but some men's shoes aren't ideal to drive in, either.
- Stop for regular breaks - don't drive for more than 2-3 hours without a break. This will help prevent you getting tired too quickly.
- Make sure you have a supply of fresh air when driving - open the air vents in your car and turn the fan on - also consider having the sunroof or a window open a crack. Fresh air is one of the best ways to prevent drowsiness.
