It had to happen eventually: Ford has upgraded the popular Fiesta ST to produce a much hotter and more exclusive car, the Fiesta ST200.
Powered by a tuned version of the firm’s fantastic 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, The Fiesta ST200 will have 10% more power and 20% more torque than the Fiesta ST. 0-62mph will be possible in just 6.7 seconds. That’s into fast car territory.
The new model will be released this year as Ford celebrates the 40th birthday of the Fiesta nameplate. I suspect the ST200 could be a future classic.
Under the bonnet
The model’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine uses a new calibration to deliver 200PS – twice the power offered by its Fiesta XR2 predecessor 20 years ago – and 290Nm of torque, with an additional 15PS and 30Nm of torque available for up to 20 seconds using transient overboost.
A 4.06 ratio final drive – shortened from 3.82 in the Fiesta ST – further enhances in-gear acceleration. Translated into English, this means that the engine will rev slightly higher than the ST would at the same speed, but will accelerate harder.
According to Ford, the ST200 will accelerate from 31-82mph in fourth gear in a blistering 5.2 seconds. Top speed will be 143mph.
Official fuel consumption and emissions figures are 46.3mpg and 140g/km CO2, but if you’re buying one of these you probably won’t care.
Ride & handling
Ford has tweaked the suspension and steering setup from the Fiesta ST in order to improve ride quality and handling.
Apparently, the rear twist-beam has 27 per cent more roll-stiffness, while the size of the front anti-roll bar has been increased to 21mm from 19mm diameter. Damper specifications have also been changed. Like the Fiesta ST, the ST200 sits 15mm closer to the road than standard Fiesta models.
The ST200 will be fitted with Ford’s Enhanced Torque Vectoring Control (eTVC) and 3-mode Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
The eTVC system applies brake force to the inside front wheel when cornering to improve road holding and reduce understeer without affecting speed. The ESC system has three modes, allowing drivers to choose between full system function, limited intervention and complete deactivation.
She’s got the look
The ST200 will only be offered in one colour: Storm Grey with 17-inch ST alloy wheels finished in matt black with polished rims.
Fiesta ST200 models also feature red painted callipers alongside the ST-specification large trapezoidal grille with honeycomb construction, dynamic front spoiler and side-skirts, body-colour rear diffuser element and large rear roof spoiler.
An enhanced interior specification includes unique partial leather Charcoal Recaro front seats that are further distinguished with contrasting silver stitching, as are the seatbelts. Illuminated scuff plates incorporate the ST200 logo. Carbon fibre dashboard inserts, alloy-metal pedals and gearshifter, and an ST-specification steering wheel also feature to provide clear differentiation from standard models.
The Fiesta ST200 is now available to order in the UK, priced at £22,745.
