New Dangerous Driving Offence Recognises Serious Injury

A new dangerous driving offence is to be introduced, that of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

At present, there are two classes of dangerous driving offence:

  • Causing death by dangerous driving (max. prison sentence 14 years)
  • Dangerous driving (max. prison sentence 2 years)

The new offence will carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison and is intended to bridge the gap between the two existing dangerous driving offences.

The measure has been announced by the Ministry of Justice as part of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill and will shortly go before parliament.
