Happy New Year and welcome to what could be one of the most expensive years ever for motorists, especially if you have an older car.
New MOT rules and high fuel prices mean that motoring is not going to get cheaper for any of us – but drivers of older cars will be hit hardest, as always…
Tougher MOT Rules For 2012
A number of new checks are being added to the MOT test in 2012, thanks to EU harmonisation and the need to update the test to cover more of the electrical systems that are fitted to modern cars.
Examples include ESC systems, almost all dashboard lights and the speedometer, catalytic converters and airbags (wherever originally fitted) and forward and backward adjustment of the driver’s seat. All rear doors must be able to be opened from the outside, too.

Many of these problems will cost hundreds of pounds in parts alone to fix, meaning that it could be cheaper to scrap the car and buy another than to repair it.
The good news is that there will be a three month grace period until April 1st 2012. During this time, failures under the new rules will only be marked as advisories, so cars will still be issued with a year’s MOT.
